I was born in Chesapeake, Virginia.   I was raised by my mother and was the youngest of three children.
People ask me, “How did you get started in comedy”?   I tell them, “Comedy found me”.  My brother and sister were older than me, so I spent a lot of time by myself.  I read comic books and had imaginary friends.  Being a “momma’s boy” in the project was a no-no, so I got picked on a lot.  I wasn’t much of a fighter and couldn’t run very fast, so I would crack jokes at the bullies and that would get the crowd on my side.  I could see that making people laugh could get me out of trouble.  I became the class clown.  My teachers hated me, but my classmates loved me.

I grew up watching reruns of The Dick Van Dyke show, The Carol Burnett Show and Mork & Mindy.  I was so impressed with their talent, I knew that I wanted to do that, then I was introduced to the comedy of Richard Pryor.  My cousin, Kevin, and I would sneak my mothers Richard Pryor albums and impersonate him (no-no, again).  Then, I saw Eddie Murphy perform live and I was hooked.

I went on to college in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  I played sports and loved to play basketball.  I knew I had to make a choice.  What would make me happiest, sports or comedy?  Well, you guessed it.  I chose comedy.  I got my first three minutes on stage and it was better than scoring a basket or making the game-winning touchdown.  From that day on, I never looked back. The rest is history.

I thank God every day for comedy.  I have come to accept by purpose in life “to bring joy and laughter to people”.
